The Largesse Mostly Recommends Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

June.27.2009

The following pieces were written completely independently of each other – in fact, the writers didn’t know the others were tackling the subject at all.  [Ed. Note: We should probably communicate better around here.]  In the interest of full disclosure, we present them all here for your edification.

First up, A. Friend:

I’ve never known exactly what true students of the craft think about the music of Michael Jackson.  Folks like the Notorious E.P.C., who has friends in high places in the world of music criticism, surely have a view of his catalog, but whether they love it or hate it, I don’t know.

Nor do I care, because my enjoyment of music owes its very existence to Michael Jackson and, more precisely, Thriller.  Everyone has certain pop culture markers that define eras of their life, and Thriller was the first, and remains one of the biggest, of mine.  I remember being on the school bus at the tender age of 7, when a classmate brought the album (as in, actual vinyl) to school one day for show-and-tell.  He was unquestionably the coolest kid in school that day, basking as he was in the reflected coolness of the coolest album, made by the coolest guy, in the universe.  I remember wanting his red leather jacket and his sequined glove, and there is a picture, famous in my family, of young A. Friend asleep on the couch one Christmas evening with the glove on one hand and a 1984 Michael Jackson wall calendar in the other.

The Largesse Goes on a Jazz Odyssey

June.13.2009

We’re going to go a bit free-form this weekend.

Let’s all congratulate Plax for a couple of things.  First, his Penguins (somewhat improbably) won the Stanley Cup last night, bringing success to the single most underrated city in the country.  Plax and I once drove to Pittsburgh to see a midget named Man Boy run down a bar and pour shots in people’s mouths.  (True story.)  We went to a Pirates game so we wouldn’t have to tell people we went all that way just to see a midget, but then two things happened: Man Boy was worth the drive and so was the whole city of Pittsburgh.  Cool town.

Ice Road Truckers: It begins and ends right here. This show is astonishing. The History Channel is running an all-day marathon in preparation for the Season 3 premier Sunday night at 9pm. Do yourself a favor and tune in. Get familiar with the Northwest Territories, the frozen lakes these truckers traverse across, the diamond mines they provide supplies for, and the truckers themselves. This show will blow you away. Man strength.

Pixar: Toy Story, Bugs Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Nemo, Incredibles, Cars, Wall-E, and now this weekend: Up. There is a zero percent chance that this movie is bad. Zero. FYI: Monsters Inc. is still the best of the bunch.

Kim Jong-il: This guy is bat-shit crazy. Holy hell.

Sports: Stanley Cup begins tonight in Detroit, nice job by NBC scheduling three games in four days (dicks). Pens-Wings II. 8pm. Also, your boy Rafael Nadal continues to not lose at Roland Garros (pronounce as if you’re a stroke victim.) He rocks Capri pants and goes for 33 in a row this weekend.

Phil Spector’s hair: 19 years to life for Mr. Spector is going to really cause some havoc on the dome. The absence of hair products will spell certain doom for Phil. I look for him to kill more people before heading to jail.

Memorial Day Weekend goodness.

Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired: HBO in the house. From Mia Farrow:  “…he was passionate about what he was doing.” Thanks, Mia. So look, this dude is pretty fascinating but the story of his life pales in comparison to how fascinating his trial was for “unlawful sexual conduct with a minor” (Samantha Geimer, now Gailey). The documentary is very well done and I’d recommend checking it out if you can. It’s the first portrayal of Polanski that I know of that tried to capture both his smarmy off-the-set sexual habits and couple this with his extremely painful life following the death of his true love, Sharon Tate. Check it.

Pens-Canes, Game 3: Carolina needs it. Pens would like to put it out of reach. The NHL continues to amaze.

http://fuckyoupenguin.blogspot.com: Finally, a blog that puts cute animals in their place. Get on it.

Meghan McCain vs. Bristol Palin: one is pro-sex, republican, and has a soapbox upon which to bitchslap the other’s abstinence propaganda. They need to collaborate more often in my dreams. Paging E!

Happy Birthday: Kelly Monaco and Ken Jennings. We love you both for very, very different reasons. In fact, going forward The Largesse will be more careful to incorporate both of you into our daily posts. God Bless.

Because we care.

The Preakness: We’re supporting the Philly, Rachel Alexandra, if only because the best Horse Race we’ve ever watched involved the death march of Eight Belles. RIP.  I’m not saying we’re looking for a repeat performance, but we’re definitely looking for a repeat performance.  The Largesse: no friend of PETA.

Extreme Loggers & American Loggers: Discovery Channel marathon starting at 3pm running through the night.  Seriously: you have no idea. Along with Ice Road Truckers this is by far the most intense series on the Discovery Channel. Not as much “story” as Deadliest Catch or Whale Wars but far more intensity, fighting, and man-strength.

Ferrell and Green Day on SNL: Check it, if only to watch Ferrell get on stage with Green Day when they perform (probably with a cowbell).

The Cannes Film Festival: Not awesome. Fuck it.

Brett Gardner: Inside the park homer last night against the Twins. A faster dude from 1st to 3rd you will not see.
